What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax-based tax on consumption of goods and services. It will be levied at all stages right from manufacture up to final consumption with credit of taxes paid at previous stages available as setoff.
What has changed under the new GST reform?
Under the latest reform, the GST rate of 18% on individual health insurance premiums is now exempted resulting into zero tax effective from 22nd September 2025, making policies more cost-effective.
Which health insurance policies are covered under this reform?
The GST exemption currently applies to:
- Individual health insurance policies
- Family floater policies
- Senior citizen health insurance policies
- Critical Illness
- Personal Accident when bundled with health insurance
Does this make health insurance more affordable?
Yes, absolutely. With savings of 18%, health insurance becomes more affordable and accessible, especially for first-time buyers and families.
Are corporate group health insurance policies included?
As per the current government announcement, the benefit applies to individual health insurance policies only. Group policies provided by employers may not be covered. We will keep you informed if there are any updates.
Will this affect my tax benefits under Section 126 of Income Tax Act, 2025 (Previously 80D under erstwhile Income Tax Act, 1961)?
No, your tax benefits remain unchanged. You can continue to claim deductions under Section 126 of Income Tax Act, 2025 for the premium paid (excluding GST, as it no longer applies).
Will hospitals charge GST?
Hospitals may still charge GST on certain goods or services, if applicable. However, when you purchase or renew your health insurance policy on or after 22nd September 2025, no GST will be charged on the premium.
